NHS Somerset was established on 1 October 2006, replacing the four former Primary Care Trusts, Taunton Deane, Somerset Coast, Mendip and South Somerset. The main function of NHS Somerset is to commission high quality health services to meet the needs of the population of Somerset, working with partner organisations in the NHS, local authorities and the voluntary sector.
NHS Somerset commissions services from local NHS Trusts, the Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, independent and voluntary sector providers, and its own provider arm.
NHS Somerset also coordinates the planning and funding of all NHS independent contractors including
- 75 GP practices
- 70 dental surgeries
- 89 community pharmacies
- 55 optometric practices
In addition to its commissioning responsibilities, Somerset Community Health, the provider arm of NHS Somerset, is also a significant provider organisation in its own right, responsible for the provision of 13 community hospitals, community nursing, public health nursing, health visiting and school nursing, therapy services and a range of specialist community services to its population.
We encourage and welcome comments and feedback about the health care services we provide or commission. Your contributions are a valuable means of helping us ensure that you and everyone in Somerset receive the highest standard of health care services from the NHS.
